Brown-Forman and Amcor PET Packaging have teamed up to launch new 750 ml versions of Brown-Forman’s well know brands of spirits — Canadian Mist, Southern Comfort and Early Times. Although the 750 ml sizes for two of the brands had been in molded PET for several years, the products had first made their debut in generic-looking stock containers. Brown-Forman decided that it wanted the smaller versions to have a close resemblance to the larger, custom-designed and successful 1.75 L sizes.

“We originally selected Amcor to work on our 1.75L sizes because they had an excellent engineering group,” says Lou Kelly, director of package engineering and purchasing, Brown-Forman. “They were able to push the production envelope.”

Kelly says that translating the 1.75 L package into the smaller size and still maintaining an aesthetically pleasing look was not as easy as might be imagined. “If we had maintained the same grip but downsized the rest of the package, there would not have been any room for the label.”

The Canadian Mist 750 ml design has a sleek indented grip and an asymmetrical body to maintain the custom look initiated by the 1.75 L bottle. Southern Comfort’s new 750 ml PET version borrows from its glass counterpart with distinctive insets on each side of the bottle, creating an encapsulated edge to house the embossed brand name.
