Representatives of Amcor PET were doing more than window shopping at this year’s K Show. Their objective was to find equipment that would help their company extend its reach beyond the high-volume stretch blowmolded water and soft drinks bottle markets, according to one published report at the show.
Amcor has achieved a position of world dominance in the blowmolded bottle market. Last year the firm produced over 32 billion bottles. Profit margins in this market, however, are notoriously thin, and thus the company is eager to expand and find new market niches.
Phil Gunning, Amcor PET vice president of sales and marketing, said the firm is committed to entering the cosmetic, toiletries and pharmaceutical packaging markets. Gunning noted that the production requirements for these markets mandate a completely different machine strategy. In Canada, Amcor PET Packaging has plants in Vancouver, Calgary, Brampton, Montreal and Moncton.
