A glass-reinforced grade of Dow Automotive’s Questra syndiotactic polystyrene (SPS) has replaced glass-filled nylon in the mirror bracket for Nissan’s 2000 Frontier, Xterra and Altima models.

Dow states that Questra provides excellent dimensional stability and is insensitive to moisture. By converting to SPS for this component, Nissan achieved a 20 percent reduction in weight, significant component cost reduction, and energy savings. As well, the need to dry the resin was eliminated.

The SPS application received the Society of Plastics Engineers Automotive Division award last fall for “Most Innovative Use of Plastics”.
