Toronto has been selected as the site for the 5th World Congress on integrated resources, the R’ 2000. The Congress will take place in June 2000, with more than 1,200 delegates from some 80 countries expected to attend. The town of Markham and the Region of York led the effort to bring the R’2000 Congress to Canada.

The Congress is an outgrowth of the first World Summit on the Environment, held in 1992 in Rio de Janeiro. Following the Summit, the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), established a committee to invite specialists from around the world to debate problems related to integrated resources management, waste reduction and treatment from social, regulatory and political perspectives.

Now held every second year, the Congress features speakers who are leaders on various aspects of sustainable development. The organizing committee of the R’2000 Congress has over 100,000 sq. ft. of floor space booked and is in the process of soliciting speakers and sponsors.
