To ensure that its Mosquito Magnet Pro would stand up to years of outdoor exposure, American Biophysics Corp. chose Bayer’s Lustran ABS capped with Centrex weatherable polymer for the housing of the machine.

The machine entices biting insects by producing warm, moist carbon dioxide to mimic the breath of a mammal. As the insects approach, the Mosquito Magnet vacuums them into a net where they dehydrate.

Spartech Inc. co-extrudes Lustran 752 ABS with a laminated cap of Centrex 833 into sheets for the housing, and also extrudes the Lustran material into sheets for the manifold housing.

The parts are thermoformed by Universal Plastics. Secondary operations include trimming and affixing a metal plate on the housing, then bonding two parts together with a structural adhesive.

“We’re getting better than average cycle times with these materials, and we have a minimal amount of finishing operations because these plastics are easily machinable,” reports Joe Peters, president of Universal Plastics.
