The use of Avery Dennison Avloy dry-paint film on the Lincoln Blackwood hybrid SUV achieves a number of “firsts” for dry-paint film applications. This is the largest exterior dry-paint film developed to date, covering 35 sq. ft. per vehicle. It is also the first exterior wood-grain application for Avloy.

In this application, ABS-backed Avloy is combined with acrylonitrile styrene acrylate (ASA). As well, Avery Dennison’s Avcoat pressure sensitive paint film is applied to a crowned groove molded into the woodgrain panels. This gives the appearance of rolled stainless steel to give the overall in-laid plank look desired for the Blackwood.

The Avloy film is supplied in roll form, which is thermoformed and trimmed to the shape of the class A surface. This applique is inserted into the injection mold cavity and a melt bond is created, so that the dry-paint film is permanently integrated into the final molded part.
