Total worldwide investment by automotive assemblers is down 26 percent for the first half of 1999, but Canada has maintained its position internationally as a destination for capital investment, according to a report published by the Automotive Parts Manufacturer’s Association (AMPA). Overall, Canada has historically ranked high when comparing locations by country for investment dollars. For the first half of 1999 it ranked 8th globally, which is the same position it held in the second half of 1998. Canada’s investment in the first six months of 1999 comes from only three new investment announcements, which have led to a significant drop in overall investment spending compared to the same period last year.
