The year-2000 update of ISO 9000 standards raises questions about the automotive-specific ISO-dependent standards, QS-9000 and the TE Supplement.
Currently, explains Richard Clements, group leader with the not-for-profit ISO 9000 Support Group, ISO 9001:1994 standards are embedded in QS-9000 requirements, and the TE Supplement is based on QS-9000 with some additions and deletions.
“Will the QS-9000 standards change to incorporate the 2000 edition ISO standards?” asks Clements. “It’s not clear yet. We’re hearing indications that QS-9000 may be dropped and replaced with ISO technical report 16949, a guideline for implementation of ISO 9001 among automotive suppliers.”
Meanwhile, moldmakers like Redoe, a first tier supplier to Ford, have to cap off their QS-9000/TE registration with adherence to Ford’s own quality operating system and achieve Q1 status by December 2000.
