Conference to cover RFID"the biggest thing since barcoding"

The first major conference on Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology in Canada will be held on April 27 and 28 in Markham, ON. Developed in the 1950s, RFID is a tracking technology using so-called "smart tags", each containing a microchip attached to an antenna that transmits data to reader. Lower chip costs, new applications and the fact, unlike barcoding, RFID does not need a line of sight to recover data contained in it, have created widespread interest in the technology.
Bob Moroz, president of R. Moroz Ltd. (Markham, ON), one of the sponsors of the conference and a supplier of RFID technology, says the RFID market is seeing explosive growth.
"The RFID market today is worth $1 billion and is expected to grow to $3 billion within two to three years," says Moroz.
Moroz says RFID has many potential plastics applications, the most prolific at the moment being the embedding of smart tags in pallets. Other potential plastics applications include packaging and tracking work-in-progress, such as high-volume automotive work.
