Industry partner Frost & Sullivan have awarded resin supplier FRX Polymers LLC, of Chelmsford, Mass. with the North American Product Innovation of the Year Award for the company’s new class of high performance flame-retardant plastics.

FRX’s polymers are transparent, have high melt flow and are inherently fire resistance. They have a similar balance of mechanical and heat resistance properties to Polycarbonate. The company’s polymers will find uses as specialty flame retardant plastics and also as non-halogen-containing polymeric phosphorus flame retardant additives. These plastics have the highest Limiting Oxygen Index (LOI) of all commercial thermoplastics at 65 per cent. LOI indicates the oxygen content required to sustain a flame.

“FRX Polymers has delivered an important innovation to the world of flame resistant plastics. FRX Polymers is the first company to commercialize polyphosphonates, an innovative approach that combines non-halogen-containing flame retardancy in a polymeric form,” said Frost & Sullivan’s Krzysztof Grzybowski. “They have proven that their products deliver flame retardancy according to the most demanding of the UL 94 standards while also improving the physical properties (mechanical, heat and rheological) of many host plastics, cost effectively.”
