Power transmission component manufacturer Fenner Drives has developed a lightweight thermoplastic pillow block for Tectrix’s line of heavy-duty exercise bikes. Designed primarily for health clubs, Tectrix bikes require reliability and durability characteristics far superior to home units. Fenner Drives’ pillow block replaces steel with LNP Engineering Plastics’ Verton RF, a long glass-fibre reinforced nylon 6/6 structural composite. The composite gives the part high impact and fatigue resistance as well as excellent wear properties. In the Tectrix application, the composite part allowed a redesign for part interchangeability, replacing two separate steel components. The Verton RF pillow block is also much lighter, weighing in at 1.5 lbs, compared to 8 lbs for the steel unit.
