When used to measure water in saturated steam applications, liquid level sensing probes must be able to withstand harsh operating conditions. Because of its combination of electrical, mechanical and chemical resistance properties, Victrex’s PEEK 450GL30 is used as a seal against steam in a sensing probe developed by Magnetrol International.

The probe’s PEEK seal component was developed after several attempts to create a feed-through seal design based on ceramic insulators brazed to metal components.

“Exposure to steam requires a high continuous service temperature and our PEEK 450GL30 components continue to perform successfully at temperatures up to 300C (570F),” says Bob Botwinski, Magnetrol product manager.

The probe design was developed using PEEK in rod form, avoiding the risk and expense of building a mold before the design was proven. Now that the design is successful, production of the PEEK parts will be converted to injection molding.
