Bayer’s Plastics Division has released three new grades of Desmopan thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) resin specifically designed for soft-touch overmolding applications. The new grades of Desmopan are compatible with a variety of thermoplastic substrates and exhibit good bonding characteristics to ABS, polycarbonate, polystyrene, polyester and other materials. By incorporating mechanical interlocks into product design, molders can overmold Desmopan onto virtually any substrate.

Ranging in hardness from Shore A 70 to 80, the grades (KU2-8670, KU2-8651 and KU2-8655) exhibit a property matrix that typically shows better resilience, as well as abrasion tear resistance, than other elastomers. The combination of durability, comfort and good aesthetics makes the new grades ideal for applications such as consumer electronics, toys, tools, housewares and appliances.

“For applications where you might need to attach several soft-touch pieces to a hard part, it’s the perfect solution,” says Gerry DiBattista, Bayer TPU market development specialist.
