In an apparent industry first, at least one large Tier One is presently developing an instrument panel with a structural support crossbeam thixomolded from magnesium. Thixomolding is a process of molding molten magnesium using modified injection molding equipment to produce parts that would normally be made by more costly die-casting methods.
A company spokesman for the supplier said at the show that, in addition to significantly reducing weight, the thixomolded support beam integrates bracketry, and thus reduces part and assembly costs. The magnesium beam also acts as a heat sink for IP electronics, which in turn simplifies design and frees up space.
