High performance dip molding techniques have made it possible for Med-Conduit Inc. to cost-effectively produce limited production runs of its innovative medical product while adhering to precise manufacturing standards.

Med-Conduit Inc. worked with custom dip molder Polyzen Inc. to develop a device that functions as the long-term access point for a catheter. Polyzen created a stainless steel mandrel that incorporated the key features of the conduit: a cuff, an accordion section and a component to anchor the conduit in the body.

In dip molding, the mandrel is dipped multiple times into a polymer solution to form the required thickness, after which the shape is baked until it hardens. The part is then peeled from the mandrel. For the Med-Conduit application, Polyzen used a polyurethane resin formulation supplied by Thermedics Inc., Waltham, MA.
