Moldflow's 2004 acquisition of American MSI put them in the hot runner control business, with the Altanium brand. Altanium's new Matrix 2.2 interface controls up to 384 hot runner zones, and comes in stand-alone and moldmount configurations. The mold mount controller is mounted directly on an injection mold, saving expensive floor space and eliminating numerous connecting cables. The configuration eliminates power and thermocouple cables which can amount to a significant cost savings while reducing maintenance costs and improving safety by reducing the amount of clutter in the molding cell. The technology also improves the temperature accuracy of molten resin within a mold, significantly reducing manufacturing scrap and unplanned downtime.
