Asahi Breweries Ltd. of Tokyo has cancelled a plan to sell beer in plastic bottles following objections from environmental groups, according to a report on Yahoo News Asia.
Asahi had planned to launch Japan’s first beer container made of polyethylene terephthalate. Greenpeace Japan led a campaign against the PET plan, claiming the introduction of plastic bottles could create waste disposal problems. Greenpeace wants the beer industry to stick with glass bottles, for which a recycling system already exists.
Asahi says it will continue its research into plastic bottles and their impact on the environment.
