Unionized workers at structural foam and injection molder Horizon Plastics, of Cobourg, Ont., are picketing the facility after being locked out by their employer.
According to a report in the Northumberland Times, about 160 workers with Local 175 of the United Food & Commercial Workers Union have been locked out as of Jan. 5.
The union set up picket lines at 9 pm on Jan. 5, according to union spokesman Paul Hardwick, who was quoted in the newspaper report. The union and Horizon Plastics have failed to come to an agreement following the expiry of the employees’ contract in November According to Hardwick, the two sides were scheduled to resume negotiations on Jan. 7, and – in what he described as “ideal scenario” – a ratification vote could take place later this week.
Canadian Plastics has not been able to reach union representatives or Horizon Plastics officials for comment.
