Weather issues were behind the extended planned shutdown of Nova Chemicals’ Corruna, Ont. ethylene flexi-cracker facilities, outside of Sarnia, Ont.

Stephanie Franken, a spokesperson with Nova Chemicals in Pittsburgh, Pa. said the shutdown was a planned event for the plant in order for maintenance modernization work to be carried out.

However, poor weather and a shortage of some skilled persons prevented some of the work from being done as quickly as desired by Nova Chemicals.

“There was a lot of complex work that needed to be done, some of which involved the use of heavy equipment, and the weather was not favourable for that work to be done,” added Joann Brown, a spokesperson with Nova Chemicals in Corunna, Ont.

Brown added maintenance and upgrading work is to continue on the facility into the second quarter of 2006.

Due to the extended shutdown, Nova Chemicals issued a force majeure on ethylene, propylene crude C4s and other co-products.
