Fashionable designs are normally printed on the inside of films that are then applied to snowboards. Exel, a manufacturer of sports equipment based in Germany, manufactures these films for several Volkl snowboards using an aliphatic variant of Desmopan TPU. This grade of Desmopan does not yellow, even after long exposures to the sun, which eliminates the necessity of applying a UV protective coating to the film surface, saving costs.
“The good mechanical properties that TPUs are well known and the material’s UV resistance totally convinced us,” says Adalbert Loidi, technical plant manager at Exel.
TPU is an ideal material for the icy moguls and deep snow because it is both flexible and extremely impact resistant at low temperatures. It is also highly abrasion resistant.
