PEEK Extends Life of Motor Components.

Vacuum cleaner manufacturer Dyson has chosen Victrex PEEK for a digital motor designed to be faster and more efficient. The Dyson digital motor has a life expectancy approximately double that of a conventional vacuum cleaner motor — an important competitive advantage as most vacuum cleaner motors wear out long before the rest of the product.

The motor was in development for six years. The motor spins the fan that generates suction and airflow. It contains no contacting components which means it can operate at 100,000 rpm, a significant increase over conventional motors which operate between 30,000 rpm and 40,000 rpm.

Dyson evaluated a wide range of materials for the fan, including cast aluminum. Engineers chose PEEK because it was the only material providing the right combination of toughness and fatigue strength. The material also offered superior dimensional stability, required for tight molding tolerances
