Dow Chemical has announced plans to close its 225 million pound-per-year low density polyethylene manufacturing plant in Freeport, Tex. at the end of March.
Dow also is ending polystyrene production at a plant in Pevely, near St Louis, Mo.
According to Dow, both closures are the result of the global economic slowdown and reduced demand for products.

The 50-year-old Freeport LDPE plant employs 40, while the Pevely site closure will eliminate about a dozen jobs.
The Pevley site will continue to make Dow’s Styrofoam-brand PS foam.
