A massive explosion at a Mexican petrochemical plant on April 20 has killed at least 32 people and forced the evacuation of surrounding neighbourhoods.
The blast at the Petroquimica Mexicana de Vinilo SA de CV (PMV) plant in the Pajaritos petrochemicals complex in Coatzacoalcos, Veracruz state, also injured approximately 136 others, state oil company Petróleos Mexicanos and petrochemicals giant Mexichem SAB de CV said in a joint news release on April 21.
The cause source of the explosion has not yet been determined.
PMV is a joint venture between Mexican petrochemicals consortium Mexichem and state oil firm Pemex. The plant produces approximately 900 tons a day of vinyl chloride monomer, also known as chloroethene, an industrial chemical used to produce plastic piping. The joint venture had forecast sales of US$260 million this year.
