U.S.-based renewable chemicals company BioAmber Inc. has partnered with German specialty chemical supplier Brenntag for distribution of its Bio-SA bio-based succinic acid and derivatives in the Americas, including bio-based 1, 4-butanediol (BDO).

BioAmber – headquartered in Minneapolis and with a Canadian operation based in Montreal – said the partnership will provide access to customers and markets across the Americas.

BioAmber is currently supplying commercial Bio-SA from a European production facility but with growing market demand the company is expanding capacity in 2014 in Sarnia, Ont. with a 30,000-tonne plant to serve the North American and other markets. Production will be expanded by 20,000 tonnes in 2016, bringing total annual capacity to 50,000 tonnes.

As an acidulant and preservative made from plant based feedstocks, bio-succinic has a range of applications, including as a raw material for polyurethanes, coatings, adhesives, sealants, and personal care ingredients.
