Bombardier opens new ATV, Sea-Doo plant in Mexico

Quebec-based Bombardier Recreational Products Inc. (BRP) has opened a new manufacturing plant in Mexico where it will build personal water crafts and engines for off-road vehicles.

According to BRP, the new facility in Santiago de Queretaro, Mexico, approximately 200 kilometres northwest of Mexico City, is home to assembly of engines for its Can-Am off-road vehicles.

The company said it plans to move assembly of some of its Sea-Doo brand products to the facility by 2015.

Once complete, the $100-million project will employ some 1,100 workers and meet LEED certification.

“Mexico is a competitive global product delivery hub for BRP, thanks to the commitment, dedication and good work of all our employees,” BRP president and CEO José Boisjoli said in a release. ”We believe that through a combination of Mexico’s outward-looking trade strategy based on its diversified network of trade agreements and BRP’s export business model, we can compete more effectively in various markets and continue to grow our volumes.”

The company, a former subsidiary of Bombardier, Inc., has had operations in Mexico since 2001, with a facility in Ciudad Juarez, where Can-Am all-terrain and side-by-side vehicles are built.

The Juarez facility employs more than 1,250 people.
