The terms “wood-plastic composite” and “injection molding” don’t go together in yet in most peoples’ minds, but a few forward-looking Canadians are out to change that. The Society of Plastics Engineers Ontario Section will sponsor an Injection Molding Minitec in March addressing all aspects of using wood-plastic composites (WPC) in molding operations.
“This is leading edge technology,” says Frank Maine, a well-known industry innovator who has developed a technology for extruding wood-plastic composites. “It’s a perfect opportunity for Canadian molders to get a jump on the competition.”
Speakers include James Morton of Principia Partners, speaking about markets for WPC, and Bill Crostic of Onaga Composites, who provides support for molded WPC part development.
Crostic explains that as a filler, wood fibre contributes to higher flexural modulus than either calcium carbonate or talc.
