GE Advanced Materials has developed two new opaque grades of Lexan LSX for injection molded parts in applications that require long-term retention of color and gloss in outdoor use.

Two of the first commercial applications for the opaque grades are industrial backhoe fenders and the housing for a wireless infrastructure product from NexGen City. In both cases, the material was chosen after testing revealed it met customer requirements for chemical resistance, weatherability, thermal stability (-40 to 77C), impact resistance and processability.

In the NexGen City communications housing (shown at left), the Lexan SLX replaces painted steel, offering lower weight and more design flexibility.

Lexan SLX is a copolymer that has been derived from polyester carbonates and resorcinol arylates. When exposed to UV light, it undergoes a photo-fries rearrangement and produces a new structure that is inherently a UV screener, essentially making the resin self-protecting.
