Variable Color Creates Sophisticated Look

Looking to incorporate an eye-catching, sophisticated appearance in its new line of premium cosmetics, “Beauty Voltage”, Shiseido chose a grade of BASF’s Variocrom pigment in the design of the packaging. Variocrom Magic Red K 4411 Color Variable Pigment provides a dazzling red to gold “flip-flop” effect.

“The unique visual effect that the Variocrom pigment creates, provides an attractive, rich look that helps make products stand out on the shelf,” said Werner Peter, business director, BASF Performance Chemicals Group in North America.

Shiseido and BASF worked together to develop a pigment that would provide the unique appearance and also be stable during processing. Variocrom Color Variable Pigments are inorganic, multiple-coated, flake-like pigments that display various hues and shades of color, depending on the viewing angle. The pigments are compatible with either polypropylene or PET. The Variocrom line can be combined with traditional chromatic pigments to achieve a broad spectrum of color effects for cosmetics, packaging, automotive and consumer applications.
