The new SONICS high-resolution stepper press from Sonics and Materials Inc. is an ultrasonic welder that replaces pneumatics with a digital stepper motor for greater control of the weld cycle. The welding head velocity can be changed or varied to meet the requirements of a wide range of assembly applications. Combined with SONICS’ microprocessor-controlled FM Power Supply, the Stepper Motor Press permits accurate positioning of the ultrasonic horn for welding to tolerances of +/- 0.0001 in (0.00254 mm).
Precision control of the welding head is also enhanced through a form factor that eliminates springs, o-rings and other flexible components that make pneumatic style presses prone to calibration errors and performance deterioration over time.
The Stepper Motor Press is programmed through a PC which can be ordered with the unit. The program can display power vs. time for repeat welding cycles and can be pre-set for acceptable tolerances. The Press is available in both 20 kHz and 40 kHz frequencies.
