Packaging producer Ten Cate Plasticum has developed a unique thermoplastic elastomer-sealed container for Beiersdorf’s Nivea Visage facial cleansing tissues. The TPE seal prevents moisture and alcohol in the tissues from evaporating too quickly after the first opening. This is the first time such a system has been used in the cosmetics market. Beiersdorf’s previous packaging system used a foil pouch with a self-adhesive label for resealing the package.

Ten Cate worked closely with a distributor of AlphaGary’s Evoprene TPE compound to develop a polypropylene container with an elastomer seal integrated into the lid. The Evoprene compound is based on Kraton G polymer, a styrenic block copolymer from Kraton Polymers.

The Evoprene compound provides an immediate airtight seal, which recovers immediately on opening to reseal effectively time after time. It can be color matched with the pearlescent effect chosen for the box, and uses ingredients which meet food contact regulations. It also co-molds easily onto the polypropylene container.
