By using Ticona’s Vectra E820I LDS liquid crystal polymer (LCP), a plastic that allows complex, fine-line circuit patterns to be laser-etched and then plated, Siemens Medical Solutions was able to mold the tiny and complex Acuris P hearing aid.

The Acuris P hearing aids are designed to help those who have moderate to severe hearing loss, and work using multi-channel, adaptive directional microphone systems. The device is molded in a three-step process.

After injection molding the LCP component, a conductor track layout is ‘drawn’ on the part’s surface with a computer-controlled laser. Finally, metal is electroplated on the conductor tracks creating a three-dimensional circuit board on the LCP’s surface.

Vectra E820I LDS was ideal for this application because its properties allow it to be molded into thin-walled parts, and processed by laser direct structuring (LDS), creating the circuitry needed for the hearing aid and its sensors.
