A new line of digital multimeters from Tektonix Inc. features overmolding of three different parts on the instrument’s back cover in a single shot of thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) resin from Bayer Corporation. The simultaneous overmolding of the three parts–a water-resistant gasket, a mechanical connection, and four non-skid pads–eliminated secondary operations and reduced costs.
“We believed these three parts could be molded from the same material in just one shot,” said Rick Thomas, business development manager for Poly-Cast (Tigard, Oregon), the molder of the instrument’s back and front covers. “We looked at a variety of thermoplastic elastomer resins, but no single material had the right properties for all three parts.” Thomas says Bayer’s Desmopan KU2-8651 TPU resin was the only material that met all the requirements.
The grade of TPU resin chosen is a specialty blend with a hardness of approximately 75 Shore A. With good flexibility, resilience and compression set properties, the resin is suited for seals, casters, shoe soles, tubing, belting and similar applications.
