LED’s replace conventional lamps in LumiLeds Lighting’s (Best, NL) new generation of traffic lights. Housings are co-injected with an aluminum pre-form, requiring a resin with low thermal expansion and restricted anisotropic behavior. Thirty percent glass reinforced Stapron C PC/ABS blend was selected for the application, combining increased low temperature notched impact resistance with low melt viscosity for enhanced processing. Lenses are molded with special grades of Xantar PC developed for optimal transparency to each colour of LED light. The flame-retardant grades meet UL’s V-0 classification and feature additives without bromine or chlorine.
