PlastIndia 2009 was described as a “thumping success” by PlastIndia Foundation president Arvind Mehta.

And Canadian exhibitors couldn’t agree more.

The show — held from February 4 to 9 in New Delhi, India — featured 1,517 exhibitors and drew more than 130,000 business visitors, almost double the 2006 show figure of 80,000. The event featured 20 country pavilions and four theme pavilions, including Plastics in Agriculture, Recycling, Energy Conservation and an End User Pavilion.

With India being one of the few countries to forecast a growth in GDP for 2009, there was a good deal of industry buzz centred around the show — and neither exhibitors nor attendees seemed disappointed with the end result, according to Tom Sockett, head of trade and shows at the Canadian Plastics Industry Association (CPIA). “The show was incredibly busy,” said Sockett, who attended as part of the CPIA/Canada mini-pavilion.


One of the CPIA’s missions at PlastIndia, Sockett said, was “to beat the drum for Canada’s plastics industry,” and to reinforce the fact that Canadian businesses are interested in making connections with Indian firms. “Attendees expressed considerable interest and curiosity about Canada from several perspectives: business, educational, and job opportunities,” Sockett said. “A lot of this interest stems from the fact that there are substantial populations of people from India in both B. C. and Ontario.”

The CPIA/Canada mini-pavilion hosted moldmaker- Prosin Molds of Mississauga, Ont., and equipment supplier Corma Inc., of Concord, Ont. According to John Hynds, Prosin Molds’ vice president of sales and business development, he fielded a large number of business inquiries during the six days of the show. “This was our company’s first appearance at a PlastIndia show, and the number of contacts we made definitely met our expectations,” he said. “Like a lot of mold shops, we see doing business in India as a long term strategy, and going to the show was an important step in this process.”

According to Tom Sockett, the CPIA/Canada mini-pavilion also served as a home base for Export Development Canada (EDC). “This enabled EDC regional manager Vibhav Agarwal to contact Canadian exhibitor’s participating independently at the show,” he said. Canadian companies exhibiting independently at PlastIndia 2009 included Alpha Marathon Film Extrusion Technologies Inc., Husky Injection Molding Systems, Macro Engineering & Technology Inc., and Mold-Masters Technologies Ltd.

The next PlastIndia show will take place in February 2012.
