Instead of developing a new product line for its Compliments Ice Cream brand, Nova Scotia-based grocery retailer Sobeys Inc. added a new flavour to the packaging.

Instead of developing a new product line for its Compliments Ice Cream brand, Nova Scotia-based grocery retailer Sobeys Inc. added a new flavour to the packaging.

Sobeys converted the design of the plastic tub containers to an in-mold labeling (IML) process, which helped enhance the graphics and made the nutritional labeling more legible.

“The overriding rationale behind the decision was to enhance the design attributes of Compliments’ ice cream tub packaging, and to further differentiate Compliments,” explained Scott Cooper, vice president of marketing and location planning for Sobeys.

The innovative design decision earned Compliments one of the greatest compliments a consumer packaging product can receive: a Chairman’s Choice Award at the Packaging Association of Canada’s National Packaging Competition (NPC).

Developed in partnership with manufacturer Ropak Packaging and printer Drukkerij Verstraete, the IML process has enhanced the brand’s visual appearance on store shelves and maintained a clean and clear packaging surface.
