The first commercial flexible package featuring the inline application of the Hefty Slide-Rite Advanced Closure System was launched at Pack Expo last fall. Pactiv Corp. and Sargento Foods Inc. worked for 18 months to apply the slider closure on a horizontal form-fill-seal machine. Until now, it had only been available on pre-made bags.
“The key was to develop a consumer-preferred slider closure package that provided the required level of hermetic properties, functionality, tamper-evidence and merchandising without adversely affecting machine speed and scrap,” says Brad Rostowfske, a senior business manager for Sargento Consumer Products Division.
Tamper evidence for the Sargento package is provided by a “hood”. The consumer must tear off the hood to gain access to the slider device.
Pactiv is now licensing the retrofit technology and working with OEMs to apply the feature to new equipment.
