In response to new, strict automotive VOC emissions regulations, Motorola’s new automotive gas tank sensor detects system leaks and warns the driver of the event using a dashboard indicator. ITW Insert Molded Products (Mokena, IL) molds the sensor housing in Fortron linear polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) from Ticona. Fortron 1140L6 with 40 percent glass filler exhibits flexural and tensile strengths about 25 percent higher than glass-filled polyester and retains better than 90 percent of its mechanical properties in auto-oxidized fuels at 121C. High dimensional stability ensures electrical contact reliability, and the resin is compatible with epoxy adhesives.
