Rigid fx Orthopedics selected GE Advanced Materials’ Lexan HPS7 polycarbonate resin to manufacture its ClearView Wrist Fixation System, a wrist fixation device used to support common wrist fractures. The ultra-light device weighs just 1.9 oz. and has a high-tech, slim appearance compared with unwieldy, traditional devices. Surgeons benefit from the material’s translucent and radiolucent qualities which allow x-rays to penetrate better than rod-and-screw devices, and provide an unobstructed view of the trauma area from any viewing angle.
Introduced in June of this year, Lexan HPS7 provides superior impact resistance, even after multiple autoclave cycles. The material is biocompatible, lipid-resistant and does not degrade after repeated exposure to gamma or steam sterilization.
“The unique, high-performance design of the ClearView Wrist Fixator required an innovative material technology and formulation expertise,” said Mark Estrada, president of Rigid fx Orthopedics Corp. “GE Advanced Materials delivered on all fronts to help us pioneer this first-of-its kind orthopedic device.”
