When appliance manufacturer W.C. Wood, Ltd. of Guelph, Ont. redesigned its Millennium line of dehumidifiers, the product design team found a balance between design and value in Dow’s Styron A-Tech advanced polystyrene resins.

“The resin needed to be strong enough to stand up to shipping and the wear and tear of daily use,” explains Joe Suljak, product engineer with W.C. Wood. Moldability, coloring options and gloss were also important considerations.

Wood initially designed their tool for ABS, but cost concerns prompted the company to look for an alternative material. The designers chose Dow’s Stryon A-Tech 1110 for about half of the dehumidifier components, including the cabinet, front grills and water bucket.

The material has a melt flow rate of 3 g/10 min. for better filling of large or complex thin-walled parts. It has impact strength of 5.0 ft.-lb./in. notched Izod.
