The first commercial application of Montell’s Pro-fax Ultra SG853 is the Mega Bloks wagon manufactured by Ritvik Holdings, Inc. (Montreal).

Pro-fax Ultra is a new family of reactor-grade polypropylene that reaches a new level of balance between stiffness and impact strength.

Ritvik converted from high density polyethylene to the 55 melt flow grade of Pro-fax Ultra, which is a medium-impact copolymer with antistat, nucleation and slip agents, to injection mold the body of the Mega Bloks wagon. “It important the polypropylene wagon mated perfectly with our other components,” says Mike Varriano, materials and production control manager for Ritvik. “The wagon has five prongs or posts that other blocks fit into.”

Because of the lower lustre of polypropylene, the mold was modified to give a textured finish on the top surface.

For Ritvik, Pro-fax Ultra offers performance and economic benefits compared with HDPE, even though cycle time has increased marginally since the conversion.
