A fuel flap actuator made from Shell Chemicals Carilon Polymer DB6G6A11, a 30 percent glass-fibre reinforced grade of aliphatic polyketone, is produced from a single mold with an integrated thread. This electrochemical part was previously comprised of two components, a casing made of glass-filled PBT and a threaded metal insert, which had to be assembled. Carilon is able to provide the good stiffness and toughness that enabled engineers to rationalize the design of the part and eliminate the need for a threaded insert, according to the molder, Moll (France). Additionally, Carilon offers good resistance to fuels, good barrier performance and resistance to permeation by fuels and their vapors.

“We are very satisfied with the consistent reliability of the injection molded Carilon polymer parts,” says Jean Pierre Fabre, Moll’s development manager.
