Nick Durante, director of technical services for Scepter Corporation, is the new chairman of the Mould Makers Council of the Canadian Plastics Industry Association. He will be supported by an Advisory Committee composed of: Miguel Petrucci, president of Compact Mould; David Brown, president of Tradesco Mold Ltd.; Danny Capo, Bohler-Uddeholm Limited; Richard Hornung, president, Nova Wire EDM & Laser Corp.; Phil Lem, outside sales representative, D-M-E of Canada Ltd.; Tom Meisels, vice-president, F.G.L. Precision Works Ltd.; and Tony Paget, president, Garrtech Inc.

Franz Strohmaier has joined Bekum America Corp. as director of engineering, responsible for product and process development. He was formerly vice-president of engineering and advanced technologies for injection molding machinery manufacturer Engel Canada Inc.

Bekum is a global producer of extrusion blow molding machinery. The U.S. office is located in Williamston, MI.

Mark Hammond fills the newly created position of program manager — special accounts within the Thermoset Technologies Group at Engel Canada Inc. (Guelph, ON). He will have a broad “concept to commercialization” involvement with projects with a special focus on Tier 1 and 2 automotive suppliers. Engel produces standard injection molding machines and specialized systems for a full range of thermoset processes, including rubber, LSR and BMC/thermoset plastic.

Dr. John Vlachopoulos, a professor with the department of chemical engineering at McMaster University, has received the 2001 SPE education award. Vlachopoulos is credited with founding the Centre for Advanced Polymer Processing and Design at McMaster (CAPPA-D), is a frequent lecturer at conferences and seminars and a consultant to the industry worldwide. With his coworkers, he has created many commercially available software packages for process simulation.
