When Luzzani Dental Srl, a manufacturer of highly specialized dental syringes, wanted to replace stainless steel with a thermoplastic material for selected components in the Minilight brand, they chose Victrex PEEK polymer.

“Luzzani chose PEEK polymer because it is the only engineering thermoplastic that can withstand repeated hot steam sterilization cycles while maintaining a high level of mechanical strength and stress cracking resistance,” explains Michael Callahan, global medical business manager for Victrex USA.

The biocompatible PEEK polymer was specified for the point, switches and gasket components of the syringe. The material’s high modulus and superior stiffness allowed the syringe components to be designed with ultra-thin walls, which resulted in cost-effective material usage, smaller parts, and a syringe with reduced total weight.

“The components are molded with extremely high precision and consistent reproducibility. The fact that the company could choose from a wide range of colors for instrument differentiation was also an important factor in the decision to go with PEEK polymer,” says Callahan.
