Patients undergoing cardiac surgery may breathe a little easier now that Estech’s ClearView MV Atrial Depressor is made with GE’s Lexan HPM 1914 polycarbonate (PC) resin.

Atrial depressors give heart surgeons a clear view into the heart during surgery, allowing them to more easily repair or replace the heart’s mitral valve.

Estech said Lexan HPM’s resistance to fracturing makes the ClearView more reliable for surgeons to operate than traditional models of atrial depressors.

Plus, the material is easy to sterilize and offers good compatability with body fluids and tissues for contact times of up to 30 days.

“Lexan HPM resin…gives us confidence that our device will perform reliably during critical heart surgeries (and) improve patient safety,” Mike Bianchieri, senior engineer for the San Ramon, Calif.-based Estech, said.
