A cap and closure that mimic an old-fashioned restaurant-style cheese shaker have been honored with a DuPont Award: Special Citation. The DuPont Awards are the result of an international competition recognizing advances in plastic packaging.

The winning cap and closure were designed by Creative Packaging Corp. (Buffalo Grove, IL), a division of Precise Technology Inc.

Kraft came to Creative Technology with the challenge to design a cheese shaker cap that resembled an old-fashioned Italian restaurant shaker. “Our technical group responded by modifying Kraft’s existing shake cap design to create a mold that met all of their dispensing and design requirements,” explains Jeff Toth, vice-president of sales and marketing for Creative.

The new package consists of a PET bottle with a domed, 70 mm polypropylene cap. The cap has 24 product dispensing holes. It is topped by a clear polypropylene overcap, a convenience for refrigerator storage.

Toth notes that the visible threads on the cap are a deliberate design feature, reminiscent of metal caps on the old-fashioned shakers.
