A new paintable grade of Delrin acetal was chosen for a door handle with an integral latch system for the Premium Touch washing machine made by Gorenje, one of Europe’s leading domestic appliance makers. The handle is molded from Delrin DS500 and painted with DuPont’s Cromax water-borne paint system. The part can be painted virtually any color to suit customer tastes, including aluminized or chrome-plated finishes, using DuPont’s proprietary etching system. This system does not contain chromium and does not deteriorate the molded part’s properties, as may be the case with other etches for plastic parts.

The molded door handle replaced a previous construction made of ABS and metal. According to Andrej Sadar, general manager of Seca Plast, the local DuPont licensee for painting, Delrin has the metal-like behavior needed for a part that must withstand heavy use and abuse. “It has high fatigue strength, its properties are not affected by the wet environment of a washing machine, and its precision-molded characteristics ensure that the locking system works smoothly under all conditions.”
