Recent developments in Degussa’s polyamide 12 products address the need for molding compounds for automotive fuel lines that are diesel resistant up to 125 C (257 F). The Vestamid L grades are suitable for diesel vehicle with the new common rail fuel injection technology. According to Degussa, Vestamid L nylons are superior to other solutions and more cost-effective than vulcanized elastomers.

Ultra-clean compounds for disk drive components
Fibrils are the key ingredient contributing to the low level of metal ion contaminants found in LNP’s ultra-clean Stat-Kon compounds based on polyetheretherketone (PEEK) and polyetherimide (PEI). Fibrils are microscopic-sized carbon-based “tubes” condensed from air. They provide protection against static build up in parts made of engineering plastics.
“The fibril-filled PEEK compounds are about 95% lower in metals compared with carbon-fibre filled PEEK. And the fibril-filled PEI showed about a 60% reduction in total metals compared with carbon-fibre filled PEI,” says Mark Kaptur, product marketing manager for Stat-Kon. “But we did see lower physical properties, except for tensile elongation.” Heat deflection temperature is lower for the fibril-filled PEI.

Foaming agents for wood-plastic composites
New grades of Hydrocerol chemical foaming agents from Clariant Masterbatches are formulated to reduce part weight, improve mechanical properties and contribute to the overall strength and structural integrity of a variety of plastic end products.
The Hydrocerol CFAs are designed for use in wood-plastic composites (polyolefin, styrenic and PVC), synthetic wine corks, PVC-foamed core pipe and related applications. The additives contain exothermic and endothermic agents along with other processing aids.
