Ultramid nylon from BASF Plastics “passed all our electrical tests with flying colors,” says Les Lindenstraus, chief engineer for Leviton Manufacturing Co. Ultramid C3U, a flame retardant nylon 6/6 with UL rating of V-0, is used to manufacture the main body of Leviton’s new line of industrial receptacles.

In this new design, the uni-body completely encloses the electrical contacts, providing high arc resistance and electrical insulation. “In the overload test,” says Lindenstraus, “we exposed the receptacles molded of C3U to electrical loads that are one and a half times the device rating, for 250 insertions and withdrawls. The receptacles passed the test.”

The good impact strength and heat resistance of Ultramid C3U were also important for this industrial application.
