New adhesives and tapes can bond low surface energy (LSE) plastics, such as polypropylene, without pretreament.

3M’s Scotch-Weld Structural Plastic Adhesive DP-8005, for example, uses a two-part, solvent-free acrylic adhesive technology that does not require pretreating. “The structural bond that results is often greater than the strength of the substrates joined,” says Barry Kostyk, 3M Bonding Systems Division key account manager.

The DP-8005 adhesive cures at room temperature, without the need for ovens, UV lamps or heaters. It resists many chemicals, water, humidity and corrosion.

3M also offers Laminating Adhesive 300LSE that can be used to bond nameplates to LSE plastics or carpet onto polypropylene door panels.
