PRODUCT: BYK-Gardner’s BYK-mac colour measurement

INFO:The new BYK-mac system from BYK-Gardner is designed to objectively characterize the total colour impression of special effect coatings in automotive and other applications.

In contrast to conventional solid colours, special effect or metallic finishes change their appearance with viewing angles and lighting conditions, and cannot be described sufficiently with traditional multi-angle colour measurement. The BYK-mac is said to be unique in that it objectively measures two parameters in one portable device: flake characterization, by measuring with a camera the visual impression of sparkling and graininess, simulating effect changes under direct and diffuse lighting conditions; and multi-angle colour measurement, to give more information about the colour travel of special effect finishes.

“We’ve taken traditional multi-angle colour measurement and added a camera to measure and evaluate the effect we see when we look at special effects coatings,” said Greg Shrider, vice president, sales. “The key advancement is that, in addition to colour illumination, we use different angles to illuminate and measure the sparkle, including both direct and diffuse illumination, which is akin to measuring how something looks on a sunny day and then on a cloudy day.”

For further analysis and professional documentation of measurement results, the BYK-mac comes with the software auto-chart: measured data is saved in an Access database and directly transferred to standardized reports in Excel.

REP: Folio Instruments Inc. (Kitchener, Ont.); 800-683-6546 PRODUCT: Dynisco’s SPXD digital display system

INFO: The new SPDX from Dynisco is described as an intrinsically-safe, loop-powered digital display system, that takes a 4-20mA signal from a pressure sensor or any 4-20mA transmitter and displays the value on a large one inch LCD.

Weighing 1.8 lb., the SPDX includes a highly visible five-digit LCD display that’s backlit for easy viewing in dark areas. The display also includes a bar graph that shows the measured value in 10 per cent increments of full scale.

According to Dynisco, power for the entire unit is supplied by the loop. Range setting, decimal placement, offset, and other parameters are said to be easily configurable via a front panel push button.

The entire package is rated NEMA 4X (IP66) for rugged process application, and can be mounted directly to the wall. An optional wall/pipe mounting kit is also available.
